Wood Engravings

Wood Engravings are traditionally done in black and white and are quite small due to the medium. They are made using very hard wood such as Box wood, with small chisels which cut away the white parts of the designs. A roller is used to ink up the wood block. This layer of ink sits on the top of the wood and does not enter the cut lines. This method of printing is called Relief and applies to lino cuts and woodcuts.

All the methods of relief printing can be printed by hand, but Christine prefers to use a hand operated printing press.
